We decided to take a 15-mile loop training hike the day after Christmas. It was great. We started at a snowmobile trail crossing, and since the trails were too bare to ride on, we hiked it. There were some tricky spots that when stepped on, our foot would break through the frozen dirt and fall in about ankle deep. And when you’re walking, that can get a little dangerous. But, we made it without any twisted ankles. The walking sticks really helped our balance.
We stopped at a snowmobile warming shed for dinner and warm coffee. Then we got back on the trail and enjoyed a gorgeous sunset. One of the best I’ve seen. That view, I keep saying, is one of the many reasons I hike. It can almost be overwhelming how badly you want to just take it in and keep it there forever, but you can’t. Then you remember that nature has a way of outdoing itself, and a few evenings later, you might see one even prettier. Even though at the moment you don’t think it’s possible.
I love this. So much that screaming and jumping up and down just aren’t enough. It’s so amazing that you can go to one spot in the woods every single day and know that it’s not going to be the same as it was the day before. I sometimes felt concerned of the monotony of hiking every day for 8 months. But then I remember how every day is going to be so completely different, and I am just left with the overwhelming feeling of excitement.
