Day 10
2-13-06
Start: South end of Greenbelt Park
Destination: Start of C&O Canal Towpath
Miles: 17.7
Weather: cold, crisp, sunny
This morning was a rough start. Deanna kindly dropped us off at our start point on time, and I suddenly wasn’t feeling well. But it went away, thank goodness. The trail we started walking on is normally a paved bike trail, but after the snowstorm, it was covered in black ice. Mom fell and bumped her knee, but it turned out to be nothing serious – whew! Our feet are healing up and things seem to slowly get better each day.
We walked into D.C. today: One kind of bad neighborhood, but we made it through okay. Safe and sound! We also got to hike on a “real” hiking trail today through Rock Creek Park. It was marked by blue blazes, even! It was very hilly and very pretty. My legs were happy to feel the uneven terrain. We ran across two ladies walking 3 dogs. They were HUGE dogs! They said the worked at a pet store called “The Big Bad Woof,” and they would post our weblink on their blog. They also gave us some hair from their dog, which is part wolf. They told us it was for luck and safe travel. How neat!
We walked into Georgetown, D.C. What a cool city! I wish I had more time to hang out here… I guess I’ll have to come back to visit. J Neil Horikoshi picked us up in Georgetown and brought us back to his beautiful home where we met his wife and daughter. What a great family. As I mentioned in an earlier entry, Neil is an AA survivor, too. They made us pot roast for dinner, and (WOW) did that hit the spot!! I am very tired and we are excited to hike our first part of the C&O Canal Towpath tomorrow. We hope to make up some time tomorrow. We’ll see!
