A Rough Day

Thank goodness we could finally upload all these blog posts.  Enjoy catching up!  We're having some great adventures.

Day 11

2-14-06

Start: Beginning of C&O Canal Towpath, D.C.

Destination: Swain’s Lock (C&O Canal Towpath, MD)

Miles: 16.6

Weather: overcast, cool, drippy

Today was actually a kind of bad day, to be honest!

We started out on the trail, and it was VERY difficult to walk on. There were footprints and ski tracks in the snow and slush that were frozen SOLID. So every step we took would turn our ankles slightly. We had to walk very carefully, therefore, very slowly. We jumped on the bike path, which parallels the towpath because it was much clearer. Mom and I got talking and missed our turn back onto the towpath, so we went out of our way and had to backtrack.

That got me a little crabby, and mom was trying to get me to chill a bit, and we got into our first “tiff.” A lot of people asked what we’d do when we weren’t getting along on the trail. Well, Mom got stubborn and sat on a curb, and I kept walking as I said, “I have the maps!” What a snot I can be… J Anyway, it was over soon, and we got back onto the towpath and things were going okay. We just started laughing hysterically about it. So I guess we get over things quickly. But we were back on the trail that was very exhausting to walk on. Then we were rerouted due to a construction detour on the towpath. Bummer. So we ended up losing miles and time today.

We did stop in at the Big Falls Visitor’s Center and talked to the people in there for a bit. They were familiar with the ADT and talked to us about our trek a little bit. It was good company. We trekked on and ended at Swain’s Lock, and Neil picked us up for another night at his home. We had chicken for dinner, and ice cream for dessert.

Neil, Al, and Lindsey – thank you SO much for your wonderful company, and for putting us up in your home for two nights. J

It might be a few nights again until the next entry – we will be camping for a bit, so I won’t be able to send in any entries until we get to a phone (We did get our email thingy replaced! Hooray!)
