Our first climb
Start: Fifteen Mile Creek CG
Destination: Town Creek Campsite
Miles: 21.2
Weather: chilly and gloomy with flurries
Actually, our climb was a short steep one, and was an accident. We were excited all day to go through the 3,118 foot Paw Paw tunnel. It mentioned that headlamps were recommended. We got almost right to it and the trail forked. There was a post where at one time there was a sign -- probably directing us in the right direction. We followed what was called the Paw Paw Hill Trail. And it was a hill! Switchbacks all the way up, then switchbacks all the way back down. The top had a gorgeous view of the mountians and the town of Paw Paw. When we got to the bottom, we were at the exit of the tunnel! Shoot! We went in and checked it out. It was pretty cool, too. But from melting snow, the ceiling was dripping constantly, so we would have ended up soaked anyway. Turns out we climbed the mountain over the entire tunnel. Oops. It sure was pretty, though. It was also a very nice transition from the flat towpath.
And... tonight is our last night on the canal. Fire-woman Mom got us a nice warm fire going, thank goodness. We are a bit chilled tonight.
The last weather forcast we saw said it would be 48 degrees and sunny today. When we woke up, we had frozen water, a thick layer of frost on the ground outside, and a layer of frost on the inside of our tent, too. So it was a brrrrly morning. And it stayed that way all day. It even flurried a bit.
We're pumped about tomorrow! We'll be crossing into West Virginia! We're just kickin' right along!
