Happy St. Patty's Day!!

3-17-06

Start: Walnut-Dowler Rd. (BT)

Destination: Lake Logan Rd. (BT)

Miles: 7.8

Weather: Chilly but partly sunny

We realized yesterday that our hotel isn't that far from the trail, so with our ever-growing exhaustion, we made the decision to take a slack day. And, oh, what a wonderful slack day it's been! We covered the section from where we left off back to Lake Logan Rd, which our hotel is on. We'll stick our poor, poor feet in the hot tub one more time and hit the hay.

This morning was a good morning to get a lot done. We ate breakfast and stashed a couple of extra bagels for backpacking lunches for the next few days. Then we did a load of laundry (I have to remember to tell all of our readers about dryer sheets!!). Then, we got online and started a new quest - shoe shopping! After probably an hour of reading descriptions, features, and completely ignoring what the shoe even looks like, we came to a decision and ordered. And now we can't wait to see if there's a difference. The feature we looked for was a stronger shoe since we're hauling a bit more weight than we originally hoped for. I'm experiencing what's called foot fatigue, and about 1:00 in the afternoon every day it begins. Sharp and dull pains take over the bottoms of my feet. Mom's shoes are just plain worn out. So we are excited to get the new shoes!

Then we headed to Wal-Mart and re-supplied our meals. We're getting ready for another 4 nights camping. So two things -- please pray for good night weather in Ohio, and we may not have cell coverage again, so if you don't hear from us, our daily entries will be updated as soon as we find a land line telephone. At least I can give everyone a head's up this time! :)

It was nice to catch up on some phone calls. I talked to Brenda and Jennifer -- always nice to hear their cheery voices and words of encouragement! I also talked to Sarah, Jamie, and Pam. Good to hear from a few friends from back home.

So a light hiking day, some rest and completed errands. We also got online and checked out some other hikers' websites. It's really comforting to read what other hikers are battling, enjoying, and discovering. Every once in a while we fall into a little rut and think we could be doing so much better. But after our slack day, we are singing a whole new tune. We can't wait for tomorrow's hike! We're ready to hit it hard!!

Oh, the dryer sheets! If you ever wanna send us something, send us 1 or 2 single dryer sheets. We found that dryer sheets are our new drug. Here's the story... Mom washed her sleeping bag at a hotel a bit ago, and I was scared I'd ruin mine, so I decided to deal with the stink. I got this wonderful idea to shove a couple of dryer sheets inside to just help the issue a bit. Our third night in a row in the tent I saw something white in my bag -- "Oh yeah! The dryer sheet!" I took a whiff, and just felt all fuzzy inside! Something clean smelling!! Aaaah! So then mom looked at me with this look like, "Can I have some, too?" I cracked up, but handed it over, and when she smelled that dryer sheet, I saw the look on her face - pure bliss. Who needs green beer on St. Patty's day when you have a dryer sheet!?

Well deserved rest day, sorry to have missed your call, will start the plans for the April Seester visit. Hope the new shoes do the trick but when you use & abuse those feet as much as you are somethings will just hurt, eventually you learn to ignore the pain, it's just another part long distance hiking. just keep putting one foot in front of the other. We're with you in spirit.
