On a Roll!

3-29-06

Start: Mt. Aire Rd. (BT)

Destination: Lake Grant Rd. (BT)

Miles: 25.3

Weather: Overcast early - perfect afternoon!

Our first stop was at the Dairy Bar in Russellville. Mom ordered a ham and cheese omelette with toast, these deluxe home fries, coffee and OJ. I ordered a regular order of home fries, French toast, coffee, and a large chocolate milk. When our food came, there was a lot there! But we ate every morsel. Those deluxe home fries mom ordered were huge, so I helped. So about a half hour down the road I got tired. That seems to be the pattern when I eat too much. But I was soon giggling at everything and nothing all at the same time. Mom just looked at me and shook her head.

Oh - with food fresh in our minds - I have to tell you that mom lost her big toe nail! It's the third toenail she's lost. The other two were from her little toes, but she says it feels much better now that it's off and not bothering her. It's pretty gross, though, and every once in a while when I start getting bratty, she threatens that she's going to show it to me - that straightens me right up. We keep joking that no matter what happens to mom, "she just kept on walking..."

Today we were breaking in new shoes. We're really still in the trial and error stage of shoe hunting. This is something I wish I'd have known before we left - what kind of shoe works on our feet with the varying terrains we'll be on. A sworn shoe by one hiker may not work for another. So I think the shoe thing is our most frustrating battle right now. Mom's new pair seems to be okay, but need breaking in, and I do think mine are too big. So we're working on plan B as we walk.

As we were walking this afternoon, a van pulled over and asked if we were Bobbi and Poot. It was Mike V., who is a trail maintainer for the section of the Buckeye Trail we were walking. He offered for us to stay with him and his family for the night, so we quickly arranged some plans, and kept walking. A couple of hours later, he picked us up on Lake Grant Rd. and brought us to his home. We met his wife, his daughter, and his granddaughter - and their REALLY cute, fiesty, energetic dog. They fed us a wonderful dinner - veggie soup and cheese sandwiches. Mom and I have been craving that for a while now - it was perfect. Thank you, Mike, for rescuing us after three nights in the tent.

There were a couple of other things I was going to write about, but I'm just plain pooped out and I need to get some sleep. I'll fit 'em in the next couple days.

I do have to say quickly that we saw a turkey and a skunk today (but not hanging out together...)

Tomorrow we might be wearing shorts! It's supposed to be in the 60's! I probably just jinxed us, but even if it snows, I might wear them, now, anyway. :)

Patty are you keeping the toe nail as a souvenier or maybe you could tie it to a string and torment Robin. Glad you had a night indoors and am envious of the shorts weather. with you in spirit

"We even got to watch the sun come up over a distant hill - it looked like a huge bright orange ball."

Um, Robin...the sun IS a huge bright orange ball...

Thought you might have missed some of my sarcasm. Great job on the journal.
Love, Adam

I see you are finding out there is no one best shoe for everyone. It is hard to find the best shoe for yourself. Unfortunatly, the only way is by trial and error(also known as blisters). It is the same for hiking and running. Hope you find the perfect one soon. You guys are doing great. It sounds like you are eating better on the trail than at home. Keep putting one foor in front of the other.
