Woke up, got walking, grabbed a milkshake... perfect morning. We started by going past Hanover College - beautiful campus. It used to be a private Presbyterian School. It sits up high with a view of the Ohio River. Jinx (the lady who helped us out yesterday - her good friend, Heinz, has MDS) gave us a tour by car last night, so we would be able to see it closer without losing hiking time.
We took a road away from it that switch-backed down to the river and followed it for quite a ways. There was a sign that said the road was closed, but we hiked on. There were a few spots where water was washing out the road, but we got over with dry feet. We're gettin' good at this! That road was pinched between the Ohio River and a huge ridge - it was a really pretty walk. We were able to watch the barges push stuff up and down the river as we walked, too. We waved at one hoping they would blow their horn, but I don't think they even saw us. Phooey...
The rest of the day was walking. We're getting a pretty good routine down. We hike all morning, eating our morning snack as we walk. Then we stop for lunch - a half-hour at most. At about 2:30 - 3:00 we take a little longer break for a ProBar and a nap (nap first to get the full effect of the energy bar, of course!). Then if we hike past 5:00, we take a break at 5 really quick and push on until scout & plop time.
Today a reporter from the Madison Courier (IN) came out to do an interview and take some photos. Jinx called them last night and let them know we were in the area. We had spotty cell coverage all day today, but he found us! :)
We came upon a little restaurant in Lexington right around 5:30, so we ate a quick dinner, and got back on the road. A little later, a guy stopped his tractor to ask where we were going. We told him, and he called his wife over. They were more than happy to let us camp in their yard, so that's where we are. Once again, very nice people. She even went the extra mile and made some media calls for us, so with that in addition to our awesome Brenda & Jennifer sending press releases, maybe we'll get some coverage in the Louisville area. We'll be right on the other side of the river from Louisville, KY.
Mom and I made up a song. She was singing an inspirational song that goes, "Climb every mountain... ford every stream...," and I had the song, "I'm every woman" stuck in my head. Well, we both ended up with mom's song lyrics in our head, and my tune. So our song goes to the tune of "I'm every woman" (Whitney Houston, I believe). These are the lyrics: "Climb every mountain - ford every stream - step over all the big logs - until you find ice cream..." It's so silly. And we don't sing in key with each other, either. We usually only sing it when no one can hear us. It sure gets us laughing, though - and craving ice cream!
There's a cricket really close to our tent right now that is absolutely driving me mad. I'm going to go chase him away.
