We woke up a little depressed today. It's our first big holiday not seeing our family, and I'm not going to lie - it's tough. We were very pokey this morning getting ready to go. We got on the road at about 8:30 - 9:00. We were expecting nasty storms today, and clouds started rolling in, so the ponchos went on. It only rained a little bit, though, so it wasn't long and they came off again. Then the weather was on and off the rest of the day from hot and muggy to cool and windy.
Nothing was open in the tiny towns we walked through today because of the holiday, so our hopes for an extra coffee stop were crushed. We stopped for lunch in Alton, and we don't like to cook our lunches, so we scavenged what was left in our snack/lunch pockets. So our lunch consisted of plain white hamburger buns embellished with granola bars, and then our Easter treat - jelly beans rolled up in the hamburger buns! So as we felt sorry for ourselves, but still giggling, we ate our jelly bean roll-ups, as we called them.
Mom's friends Pam and Jim from home were on their way back to Wisconsin from Florida, so they met up with us. That really cheered us up. After trying to coordinate a place to meet with poor cell phone coverage, we finally saw their RV come over the hill. Pam walked with us our last mile while Jim drove ahead. We walked into Dexter, which consisted of one house, and jumped in the RV to head to Tell City for a meal. Jim and Pam bought us dinner at Ponderosa - we absolutely stuffed ourselves, laughed ourselves silly, and left for a campground area.
Thank you Pam and Jim SO much for your trail magic - you really gave us a feeling of "home" on Easter! :)
I've always been one afraid of tornadoes. I would lay awake at night in my bed watching out the window to see what the clouds looked like every time the lightning struck. I am just so awed by storms and their power - they intrigue me. Maybe I need to face this fear? I'd like to see a tornado, but during the day and way off in the distance - but if I encounter one, I doubt I'm going to have the luxury to choose. I don't mind thunderstorms so much... but tornadoes - eek! So we're in our tent right along the Ohio River, but thankfully Pam and Jim are parked next to us in their RV, so if anything too severe comes through tonight, they can let us know. Oh, yeah - there are severe alerts out for southern IN tonight. That's why I'm talking storms. I'm so tired tonight, though, I think I might sleep through it.
Mom almost got bit by a scraggly little dog today. It was right at her ankles, and its nose was touching the back of her leg. The owner was outside, but didn't call the dog back up right away. But finally he said something and the dog went back in the yard - whew - close one!
We're getting our mail drop package tomorrow - I'm excited! I'm going to work on trying to fall asleep now before the storms hit.
Happy Easter everyone! :)
