Gravel Roads

4-18-06

Start: Hwy 37, IN

Destination: Addeyville, IN

Miles: 21.3

Weather: warm and sunny

We had a good breakfast with Ed, Evelyn, Jim and Roberta. We talked about all kinds of stuff.  Mom and I got a shower.  We took some pictures.  Then we packed up to go. Evelyn is one of the sweetest women I've ever met, and Ed is truly an amazing man. Mom and I are still in shock that we had the opportunity to meet these great people. It was such and honor to stay with them!

Jim and Roberta offered to take us back to our start point for the day. We said good-bye and wished each other safe travels, and we were both soon on our way.

We hiked on mostly gravel roads today, and with a clear blue sky, we had some very nice views. We had a lot of rolling hills, and some were pretty steep. I got sunburn on the backs of my legs again, but not too bad. So now our tan lines are worse than ever. "Hiker tans" instead of "farmer tans" is what we've got. My feet are bright white, and there's an obvious line where my socks go. Oh well, this ain't no fashion show! And that's nice. :)

We got to our campsite, which is downtown Addeyville along a little river - we hope it's not the bad side of town! Addeyville's population is about 3 houses and one donkey! :) I think we're safe. We tried knocking on the door of a trailer that's right across the river, but no one was home. So we found a flat spot, and here we sit. It's a nice spot, and we even get to listen to the water trickle by. Aaah, soothing.

I got a camping question answered tonight. First of all, remember that the last time we slept in the tent was a bad storm. Everything got wet. So my question was, "What happens when your sleeping bag gets wet?" The answer is, you sleep in it! I'm in it right now, and it is a little clammy and damp, but it's warm. So besides a little discomfort and extra weight in our packs, I guess it'll be okay - but the first Laundromat we come across will get a visit!

Mom and I had Peppermint Patties tonight, courtesy of Jamie and Eric (thank you!) and they really hit the spot. It made me good and tired, so I'm off to dreamland.
