Breakin' a Sweat

4-19-07

Start: Addeyville, IN

Destination: Lincoln State Park, IN

Miles: 18.3

Weather: hot & sunny - low 80's

First of all, we camped through another thunderstorm last night. I wasn't as freaked out, though - it was a not-so-threatening storm. But we did have some hail, and when we woke up there were pools of mud around us. Everything was soaked again. But we took our time and cleaned and dried things the best we could. We're camped in the Lincoln State Park tonight, and we let everything lay out for a little bit, so it all dried out pretty well.

We saw so many animals today - cows, horses, pigs, dogs, cats - and even some peacocks! And I don't think I've ever heard a peacock before today. We were walking over a hill and we heard this really loud cry. It sounded just like a cat meow, but way too loud to be a cat. It was the peacocks - how weird! They were on a farm, and there were at least 20 of them! There's also some other critters we saw today: A turtle, a salamander, some ugly jumping spiders that bit us, a BIG snake, and ticks. Yipee, eh? They have wood ticks, wood ticks with a white spot that carry Lyme Disease, and "turkey" ticks, or deer ticks as we call them in Wisconsin that also carry Lyme Disease. So we're doing the "tick-check" thing each night. Oh, boy... how much closer can a mother and daughter really get? :)

We ate breakfast at the St. Meinrad Legion. Guess what we ate? Burgers! What a great breakfast. The folks there were great. They called Fox news out of Evansville and had me talk to them to let them know when we'd be heading into the area - it's so great when the local folks call the media! The Legion folks even bought our lunch. I watched a little bit of "The Price is Right" (I thought of you, Sarah! :) ), we filled our water, and hit the road.

We went through the town of Santa Claus today - they have a big amusement park with water slides and roller-coasters, but they weren't open - it was hot today, so the water slides would've sure been nice! But we stopped at a gas station and we each polished off a pint of ice cream instead. I figure this is the only time I can do that and not feel too guilty!

Mom's still loving the flowers - especially the dogwood trees. Some of the blooms we went by today were as big as the palm of my hand.

I'm getting eaten by mosquitoes as I write this, so I think I'm going to crawl into my sleeping bag and pray it doesn't rain tonight!
