A Friendly Face from Back Home

Start: Page Ext. @ Katy Trail

Destination: Augusta, MO (KATY)

Miles: 23.2

Weather: Unseasonably Cool

We got up bright and early this morning and Aunt Margie dropped us off where we went the wrong direction from yesterday. I feel so foolish about that... oh well... we took the suggested "side trip" to St. Charles. I (ahem) meant to do that.

So we hiked the Katy trail to Augusta. The trail is really nice. The surface is fine white gravel, so it's easy to walk on. We saw lots of bikers and runners, too, but no other backpackers. It seems to be a pretty social trail. Friendly people stopped and talked to us, and being a Saturday, we saw a lot of people. We will be following the Katy Trail for over a week, and it pretty much goes west, so no more wrong turns!

We stopped in Defiance, which was a cute little town. There was a bike shop where we got ice cream, coffee, and a Katy Trail Guidebook that is very helpful. We met a couple with their little boy and talked with them for quite some time. So all in all, it was a good hiking day.

When we got to Augusta, a reporter met us and did a nice interview.

I have to interrupt a minute. A bird just poo'd on my pocketmail screen. That's a new one!

Anyway... we did our interview, and then Dick Heitkemper from our hometown of Phillips pulled up in his pickup/camper! Yeah! He's going to be a trail angel for a while - so we now have vehicle support for a while.

We're about ready to pass out for the evening, and I have to get up and make mom's coffee and breakfast tomorrow for her. It's my "Happy Mother's Day" treat. :)

And, CONGRATULATIONS Aunt Margie on your graduation! She graduated today with a Masters in Business and Management. We're sooo proud!
