A Quiet Day on the Road

5-20-06

Start: Just outside of Marshall, MO

Destination: Waverly, MO

Miles: 23.8

Weather: Hot and sunny (I'm lovin' that!)

We had one problem this morning, and that's Dick's truck not starting. But he was able to crawl underneath and rig up a wire to get it going - it wasn't a battery thing. And after mom and I got dropped off, he went to get it fixed more permanently. But being Sunday, there wasn't a garage open. He ended up borrowing some tools and buying a few pieces and getting it to work. I know absolutely nothing about cars, but I'm glad Dick does!

Mom and I walked today, and walked, and walked some more - pretty exciting, hey? It was a beautiful day. The sun was out, there were a few clouds, and it got hot in the afternoon. We went through a lot of water! Dick even had ice cubes for us at one of our stops, so mom and I both grabbed some, and as we walked, flung the cold melted water at each other. It was great entertainment for at least 10 minutes! We were laughing, and I wonder what the people in passing vehicles thought.

So we made good miles today, and we are camped at a boat ramp along the Missouri River in Waverly, MO. There's a bathroom, so we're happy campers! Dick made us dinner tonight. He made us dinner last night, too. Last night we had hot dogs and baked beans - mmm, classic! Tonight we had grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup - mmm, another classic! But two things we wouldn't carry backpacking. We are being treated very well.

I thought about Brad today - I sure hope he didn't have a hard time getting around after hiking with us. I remember our first couple of 20-mile days. We didn't want to move afterwards, and hardly at all the next day.

Mom and I are recovering from an allergy/cold thing. It hasn't been bad enough to shut us down, but it has been annoying. Mom also had a terrible heat rash or poison ivy - something - along her waistline, and that has finally almost disappeared. The poison ivy here grows like trees. Today we saw a strip of plants 20 yards long, and the plants were 8 feet tall with stems the diameter of a quarter! I just can't believe it! I'm not taking any chances, but I think I'm immune to the stuff. At least I hope! So of course, we just avoid it.

So, off to bed. It was a nice Sunday.

Do not ever count on being immune to poison ivy. Evan, my youngest son thought he was until he was in his twenties and got a very bad case in the worse place possible for a man. If all the support and hikers that join for a bit you almost have a cross country parade going on. That must really help the miles go by easier. I still think you guys are eating better on the road most days than at home. The progres is amazing. Keep putting one foot in front of the other.
