We crossed into Kansas this morning! Look out Toto, Milkshake and Gumdrop are in town! :) When we got over the border, Dick called 98.3 WCQM and we did a quick interview with Joel - that's the local radio station from back home. After that we walked maybe 5 miles before we went to look for shoes. We power shopped for about 2 hours, and mom found a pair that she thinks will work, and I think I'm going to try to stick with the kind I've got now.
Dick took a digger today - a big BIF, but with his truck. He drives ahead of us and will pull over on the side of the road and wait to see us come around the corner. When he pulled over there was a hole waist-high covered around the edge with long grass, and he sunk his front tires right into it. But he was able to crawl back out with 4WD. Whew - close one. He dented up his running board a little bit, but was able to fix it up pretty good with a hammer.
The rest of the day we did city walking. It's amazing how much more time it takes to walk through cities. We had a lot of traffic lights to deal with, and of course, lots of traffic. So the going was a lot slower. We're very happy with our mileage - especilly considering the break for shopping.
We walked for Zach today - the 5-year old boy I mentioned yesterday. We met his dad, brother, aunt, grandma and grandpa yesterday. What a wonderful group of people. He is currently in the hospital, so we're really pulling for him and his family. When we said good-bye to Tom, Zach's dad, this morning, it was really heartbreaking. He mentioned being up very late at the hospital, and you could just see the worry and exhaustion in his eyes. It hit mom especially hard. She says she remembers feeling that way when I was sick, so she understood. It was a difficult good-bye. Hopefully we'll see them again next Wednesday at our Kansas City fundraiser that Pharmion is putting on for us. Zach and his family were all certainly in our thoughts all day, and will be for the rest of the journey.
Hey, Zach - hang in there buddy! :)
