Weather: Strong wind, low 90's
Well, lots of folks told us it would be hot and windy in Kansas, and they've been right so far. Today's wind was at our face almost all day, and it was pretty strong. It was even difficult to talk at times. And we certainly felt it in our muscles. Mostly in our keesters - but that's a good thing. :) I know I could use some help there!
And I must commend Kansas Law Enforcement. Yesterday, we had an officer pull up behind Dick's truck to check on him to be sure he wasn't broken down on such a hot day. We were just walking up to meet at the truck, so we talked with him for a while - what a very nice officer!
Then, today, another officer stopped across the street, lights on, and came over to us inquiring why we were walking. So we handed him one of our cards and he asked a bunch of questions, so we had a fun time chatting with him. He took our names and off he went. We really have these guys looking out for us!
Then, later on today, we were heading to cross the bridge on Hwy 68 over a river in Ottawa, when a squad car pulled up right away and informed us that we couldn't be on the bridge. He kindly informed us of an alternate route which was very pleasant - it was a bike path. And we also handed him one of our cards, explained what we're doing and why, and had a very nice chat. Then a second officer pulled up, too. So we are just feeling safer than ever and happy that the officers in Kansas are concerned for our safety. Thanks, Kansas Law Enforcement!
We had PB&J for lunch (thick ones) and strawberries. Then we had Mac & Cheese for dinner at our afternoon break with fried venison sausage - in a pretty park. We even laid outside under a tree. It was a great break. All three of us splurged and had banana split blizzards from DQ for dessert - Mmmmm, yummy. Good eatin'!
Dick broke a personal record today - he walked 8 miles with us, and we're going to work on him until he's got and even 20. He parks up ahead of us, walks towards us, then when he meets us, turns around and walks the rest of the distance to the truck along side of us. So it won't be long...
Other than that, a good hiking day again. Tomorrow is Memorial Day, and we will be wearing our American flags on our packs - we'll walk in honor of the Military and local Law Enforcement that keep us safe at home and abroad. We especially appreciate it while we're out here walking, and are thankful to have the freedom to do so.
