The First Combine

6-7-06

Start: Near Lyons, KS

Destination: Outside Chase, KS

Miles: 22.0

Weather: 96, Hot

We stayed at the Lyons City Park last night, which was free, had showers, and electric hook-ups for Dick's camper. The highlight of that was the toad living in the ladies' bathroom. I thought for a minute about picking him up and setting him outside, but he looked pretty happy. He was a fat little thing, and looking around the park bathroom, there was plenty for him to eat. It was a clean bathroom, but had the typical park bathroom insects. I figured it was pretty smart for him to hang out there. We did leave the door cracked open for a bit just in case he decided to venture out.

Mom heard on her stereo that we'll be seeing the combines in the wheat fields for the next three days before the forecasted rains hit. She said she heard the crop this year isn't as plentiful as in previous years, but the quality is really good. We saw our first combine out in a field this afternoon - so the harvesting has begun. We have one question we were hoping someone might b able to answer for us - how many loaves of bread would a square mile of wheat make? Someone must have figured that out, right??

We had two ice cream stops today. The first was at a DQ, where Dick had gone ahead and set up a newspaper interview for us, and the second was an ice cream cup that he dropped off in the afternoon. It was a really hot day, so it was so nice. A guy pulled over and handed us two cold Pepsis today, too. We walked by one of those farm field irrigation systems, and dreamed of running through it. We have to find out if there's fertilizer mixed in or if they're just water...

Tomorrow Dick and the CRR1 are going home. We are really going to miss him and our daily ice cream breaks. It's going to be very difficult to say good-bye. We'll probably go through a little depression period - but we'll just hike it off.

According to Ask.com, one square mile of wheat = enough wheat to produce 2,600 loaves of bread. Now, how many steps does it take to walk across America?

They do add fertilizer to the water sprinklers when needed. So don't play in it. Good luck
