Start: Kinsley, KS
Destination: Kinsley, KS
Miles: 0.0
Weather: Hot outside, A/C indoors :)
We slept in as planned, but a little later than planned. Oh well, that's a good thing. The split hiking shift has been wearing on us, so it was time to catch up and change our schedule.
We're staying at the Midway Motel in Kinsley, and the owners are really nice. They even asked their son to drive us around to look for our phone. What a nice guy! But... unfortunately we did not find it. We just don't have luck with phones. We looked everywhere we could think it may have fell out of mom's pocket - just with no luck.
But Wesley, the owner's son, once again, was very kind to drive us to the local store where we could get a replacement phone. They weren't open on a Sunday, but after a phone call to the owner of the store, he was there open and ready to help us out. So we are back in business once again.
A friendly man named Marty asked if we'd like to take a break - he offered to buy us a drink. We were still planning on hiking in the afternoon, so at first it was all "no." But then we figured after yesterday, why not. So we decided to accept the offer, take a small break, not hike today, and restart with a new schedule tomorrow. The plan stuck but it was difficult to convince Marty. He tried to convince us to stay and visit, but our priority has turned to sleep and hike, so we left.
So bedtime tonight is 7 pm, and wake-up call is 3 am. We plan to hit the road 'dark' and early at 5 - 5:30 am. Hopefully we'll have our miles in by 3:00 tomorrow. Then we'll get into Dodge City on the 13th. We plan to take a working half-day off there so we can catch up on some things we've been putting off. We also plan to get our new boots and maybe shop for a half-way souvenir.
Little fact: The town we're in now, Kinsley, KS, is considered half-way across the USA. There is a sign that reads, "New York 1561 mi." and "San Francisco 1561 mi." That isn't accurate for the windy route we're taking, but it's still pretty darn cool!
Almost 7 pm, and an early morning coming fast!
