Hello, Colorado!!

We're in a new state!  Read our last three posts to catch up on the trek into Colorado.  It's been hot--and we even saw a funnel cloud.

6-18-06

Start: Just outside Kendall, KS

Destination: KS/CO border

Miles: 28.0

Weather: You Guessed It - Hot!

Woke up, had coffee, broke camp, started walking. I called my dad to wish him a Happy Father's Day, and we kept walking. Not much happened today. We got into Syracuse and stopped at a convenience store for coffee and a snack. I even had an ice cream bar. Then we hiked on.

We stopped at about 1:30 for a long afternoon break - it was really getting hot. And we were on a mission to get into Colorado today. If we had to crawl across the border at midnight, that's what we were going to do - and almost did!

So our long afternoon break took place in a low culvert under the road. It was only about 3-4' high, so we crouched down in there and took our naps. When we got up, it felt even hotter, but we trucked on anyway. We ran out of water and stopped at a house for a fill-up. People are very nice around here - and are very willing to share their bottled drinking water. We were so thankful.

Now we're camped at the rest stop on the border, but the CO side, of course. We are just beat. Tomorrow we stop in Holly to pick up our updated turn-by-turn and a mail package from dad. Then we’re off hiking again. It's supposed to stay hot, so we're gonna do the best we can -  can't WAIT to see those mountains off on the horizon!

P.S. Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there! :)

Good morning (6-19) - I have to add that it rained last night - sprinkler style! In the middle of the night the sprinklers turned on and doused us for the rest of the night. Had we been more with it last night, maybe we would have realized WHY the grass here was so nice, green, and soft - unlike the ground everywhere else for the last 150 miles! Oh well, it's easy to dry out when the sun's a-blazin’ at 5:30 in the morning. Whew - it's gonna' be a hot day!!
