We got these huge cinnamon rolls for breakfast at the hotel this morning. They were so good. Then we got back to our room and took a nap. Weird. We must've really been tired! When we got up, we hit the road and began to walk.
It got probably in the lower 90's today, so it was cool compared to our high temp of 106 so far on this trip - I think that was 4 or 5 days ago. But we still felt the heat. The dirt road we walked was completely desolate. Not a house, a tree, or any sign of human life except fence posts lining the road. The fields were sand and dry, cracked ground, cacti, and those weird spiky plants. We could see forever, but still no mountains on the horizon - at least not yet.
But - then - we could see off in the distance under the clouds - a very faint line through the thick haze. Mountains. One solid pastel color, hardly visible unless you were really looking hard - which we were. Now, as we head further west toward Pueblo we will see them clearer each day - yippee!!
We have a new lunch idea. Mom picked up one of those microwave burritos, and I grabbed a ham and cheese sub. We put them in our backpacks, which are black, and by the time we ate lunch, the burrito was warm, and my sub was a hot ham and cheese. The cheese in both was even perfectly melted. So the heat is really good for that! We each also had a bottle of iced tea, so we had hot tea to go with it. Now I just have to figure out how to get a marinated steak cooking in there! Man, all of a sudden I want a milkshake!
We are camped in a field that belongs to a horse ranch. We actually had someone turn us down tonight to camp in their yard - but only because they weren't going to be home. I guess I can't blame them for that. But we're set up and happily going to eat our gourmet Ramen noodles with Vienna sausages and sleep. I just love sleep!
