Scenery Overload #1

6-27-06

Start: Pueblo, CO

Destination: Pueblo West, CO

Elevation: 4950 ft.

Miles: 20.2

Weather: High 80s

We just touched into Pueblo yesterday, so today we started our day by traveling westerly through the city. We followed the Arkansas River on a path, and we walked by the sloped cement walls along the river - I'm sure there's a technical name for those, but I don't know what it is. Anyway, they were painted up with graffiti, and most of it was artistic or had a message. I think it was a school project or something. Monkeys, crosses, people dancing - all kinds of stuff. Some of it did look gang-related, but I don't mind that kind - it's just so cool-looking. Most of the time I can't even read what it says, but it's so colorful and some is so cleanly done. I love taking pictures of the graffiti on train cars. I heard it's very expensive to clean that stuff off, though.

After getting through Pueblo, we headed into Lake Pueblo State Park. We stopped by a cafe and ate huge Belgian waffles and drank cold lemonade. We then hiked on. I was very tired today, so mom had to crack the whip on me again. I swear I could sleep for 3 days straight if I had the chance.

Walking through the state park was pretty cool. First of all, we had a nice paved trail to follow, and we got to see a lot of different views of the mountains. They are getting closer! We were able to see Pike's Peak pretty clearly today, and the sky made it all even prettier. Big white, poofy clouds, sunbeams shining down.  It was all too much to take in. What are we going to do when we get INTO the mountains?! I'm going to blow up - and run out of camera cards!

Dad flew into Denver today, and drove down to pick us up. It is so great to see him. What a nice "pick-me-up" before we duck into the mountains. We were pretty boring tonight, though - we basically ate dinner, looked through some pictures, and are now going to simply go to bed. Tomorrow we will slack pack - YAY - I can baby my back for a couple days. I need to readjust my backpack's torso length. I think it’s set too short and squishing my spine or something. It's just a mess right now. I have another alien baby, so that can't be good. But, ah, we'll figure it out.

Mom and I are looking forward to the next couple of weeks, and then we get on to some trails again. It's been a while, so we are excited. There's always something cool to look forward to. And especially like today with the views, something new around every bend.
