A Big Hill

7-6-06

Start: CO 105 near Larkspur, CO

Destination: Flat Rocks CG, CO

Elevation: 8250 ft.

Miles: 20.0

Weather: Cool, Overcast AM/Rain PM

We were sure to walk .2 miles past the CG, and camped at a far spot so we could have a safe, even 20 miles today. The CG was calculated at 19.8 from our start point - it drives both mom and I nuts when we're that close to an even number - that's how we ended up with our 30.4-mile day.

No more slackpacking. We wore our full packs again today. It wasn't too bad, though, until we had to climb. We climbed and climbed and climbed. It was a big hill! I know there's many more to come - this is just preparing us. We went up about 2,000 ft total, and it was within a pretty short time.

Then the afternoon storm came in. We got nervous because a few really bright lightning strikes hit, and the thunder was tremendous shortly afterward. And we were still climbing. Thankfully the storm went through fast and the rain slowed, and finally, the sun came out for a little bit.

We are camped in a little campground where a lot of dirt bikes and ATVs come to ride trails. So every now and then they go zooming past really loudly. Hopefully they don't run at night! Worse than that is a very annoying bird - a crow, raven, or both. And it just won't shut up! Hopefully after it gets darker they'll settle down. I want a good night's sleep - can ya' tell? :)

Tomorrow is a big day - we might have a news helicopter come out and find us, then take some video of us walking for their morning show! How freakin' exciting cool would that be? It would be a first for us! So we're keeping our fingers crossed. Then Becki from Pharmion here in Denver is picking us up 5 miles up our trail at the Indian Creek CG, and taking us into Denver where it sounds like we're going to get a TON of trail magic! Media, shopping for gear, dinner, and a super nice hotel! Mom and I are pumped to take a short 5-mile day and chill. We're going shopping! Like real, normal people! It's going to be like culture shock. Wherever we end up going, I'm going to have to find a rock wall and scamper up it just to calm down... on second thought, nah... not on a day off! :)

Oooh, the crow is quiet now. Aaah, tortellini, then good night!
