Ghost in the Graveyard

7-12-06

Start: Chatfield Dam area, CO

Destination: Bear Creek Lake Park CG, CO

Elevation: 5678 ft.

Miles: 21.6

Weather: 90's - Hot Again

Trails were nice today - lots of nice bikers, walkers, and runners. We even met two men over the age of 80 doing 30+ miles/day on bike! How cool. Mom handed out a lot of cards today. We saw a whole bunch of prairie dogs, and just by stopping to look at them, made them really ticked off. They squealed and wiggled their tails. It was cute.

We stopped at this little cafe along the S. Platte River Greenway Trail called "Oasis on the Platte." I highly recommend it, future ADT travelers - very yummy coffee crunch drinks (frozen coffee). Terry, the owner, was super nice, too!

Get this - Milkshake is catching on to the whole GPS thing! Mom and I came to a 4-way in the trail today, and kept going straight - I guess we were supposed to go right into a park. Well, we hiked on, in the right direction, but on the wrong side of the highway. So I pulled out the GPS, plugged a coordinate for the Mojo bike shop, and we took bike trail and sidewalk until "Wah-lah" - there it was! Now I'm ready for some geocaching! I was so excited! And thank goodness, because we ended up going by a McD's where mom got a 1/4-pounder and I got a chocolate milkshake. Oh, happy day!

Then Yohanne (I hope I didn't screw up the spelling of his name too bad) came out to find us. He used to work with Pharmion and knows quite a bit about AA and MDS - and he's worked with the AA&MDSIF a lot. So it was really cool to meet him and talk with him. He bought us dinner and brought us to our campsite in the Bear Creek Park. Thank you, Yohanne! Also, a quick thank you to Richard (the dog-sitter, biker) that helped us coordinate a meeting spot - he gave directions so Yohanne could find us. Such nice people in Colorado!

Then... after getting dropped off at the nearest flat spot to the bathrooms, mom and I began to set up camp in the dusk. There was a group of kids nearby, all being fairly quiet around their campfire. We got settled in, and they just got rowdy! Leave it up to the Dizzy Dames to find the noisiest place to camp! But let me tell you what - the entertainment! We laughed SO hard! First, about 15 kids, probably around age 10-12 were trying to coordinate a game of "Ghost in the graveyard," and when asked where the "base" was, one kid near our tent yelled to the group, "not by the tent that smells like socks!" Mom and I looked at each other and just busted into laughter - they weren't talking about us, were they?! They then proceeded to surround our tent with running, screaming, and swinging flashlights. Then the funniest thing ever happened! I heard a kid scamper really close to the back of our tent (my side) and squat down, obviously hiding from the group. Then he passed gas really loudly, and mom turns over and says, "Was that you?" - looking at me, of course. And we hear this poor kid's voice say, "Sorry." Mom and I felt bad but - just couldn't help it - we laughed so hard we almost couldn't hold it. And to our surprise, the kid was laughing, too. Here I thought he was embarrassed beyond belief, which he may have been, but at least he had a sense of humor about it! I know we sure did!

Well, they have just now settled down, back around the campfire, making up scary stories. No toots, though! :)

I think the kid is related! and I think it may be time to wash the sleeping bags, again. Great story, I'm still laughing, and I can't wait to share this one. With you in spirit.
