Well, the morning started out fun. Once again our trail managed to bring us RIGHT into a meadow of stinkin' cows. We played the game "Where's the bull?" and spotted two right away. But happily, they trotted down the trail in front of us. We came around a bend, and there were more cows - probably 80-90 total, now. And the game, "Where's the bull?" got more interesting. We saw one more. So there were at least three bulls lurking around, maybe more.
Everything was going fine and dandy until the last bull we saw lowered his head and started a long, low "MOOOOOOOOOO." Then the other two bulls chimed in, then several of the cows joined. There was a group of teeted cows ahead of us that turned around and started towards us, and soon they all joined in. So we had 80 cows and at least 3 bulls following us. We freakin' booked it. We cruised up a rocky hillside into some pines, where our trail led us. Whew! We stopped, stripped a layer of clothing, grabbed a bite to eat, and all of a sudden, there they were! They followed us up the hill, too! We threw our packs on and speed-hiked like crazy, mad, being-chased-by-cows women! We came to a stream, and said 'screw it' to the dainty rock-hopping we usually do to keep our feet dry. We tromped right through and kept moving.
The good news is we out-hiked them. Then I checked our maps, and as it turns out, we missed a junction. Neither of us remembered one even being anywhere, but then again, we were being pursued by crabby BULLS! So... do we turn back and face the cows? Heck, NO! I checked the map and our coordinates, and if we keep going, we hook back up to our original route. We ended up only about an extra mile out of our way. But it was worth it to get the cows off our tails.
I suddenly have this terrible hankering for a nice big STEAK!
Other things that happened today - it was cold most of the day. Especially the afternoon wind and rain. We're cuddled up in our bags with our balaclavas and gloves on. We saw some sort of cute, playful weasel. Oh, and mom says her pee smells like Cheerios.
Mmmm, I gotta go - supper #2 is done - BEEF fetuccini! :)
