The water is in place.

Today we dropped water for our hike to Moab. We stopped in Loma and picked up Mel this morning. He was a great help, because he was very familiar with the Kokopelli Trail. Claudia drove and Mel was sort of our tour guide. He told us about some of the plants, the antelope, and even brought us up to a hidden place off the road where a house was built into the sandstone, but is now abandoned. It was really neat.

We got to each drop location without trouble. With directions from Dick, and Mel's knowledge of the trail, we were a great team.

We got a great preview of the country we're going to be walking through. It might be desert, but is it ever cool! The red rocks, canyons, rolling hills, bluffs... there is so much to look at. It's really beautiful. So we are excited to head into it slowly so we can really take it all in.

We'll be getting back on the trail tomorrow, and we won't have access to a phone or anything for 4-5 days. This will happen a lot in Utah. Oh - think about us on Wednesday - we'll be crossing the border from Colorado into Utah! State #11!

We had a busy day - we did the water drops, of course, and then we did some re-supply shopping. After that we went for dinner, then went back to Claudia's house and mom sewed the zipper on her backpack, and a tear in one of my stuff sacks. I studied maps, we separated our food items, packed as much as we could, and chatted a bit. Now we're all tired out!

We were going to stay with Melvin and Carol tonight, but Carol was very busy getting ready for an art show (she's a watercolor painter!), and their daughter was home visiting from college. So it worked out for us to stay by Claudia again. Carol and Mel were great folks and really were a lot of help. Thanks Carol and Mel! :)

Tomorrow will be the day we say good-bye to Claudia, too. She's dropping us off early, and we'll be off to Moab. We had a really good time getting to know her and her family. We will certainly be walking a day for Ken. He enjoyed hiking, too, so maybe he'll even be with us that day in spirit.

Well, I am really off to bed now. 4 am will come way to early tomorrow!

Is our "other" seester losing it or what??? Maybe she just has this longing desire to really be back in Wisconsin with us. Talked to Keith and Jennifer from the Foundation and we are trying to increase our efforts to get you guys some publicity and hopefully donations. Love you both. Hope we can talk again soon. Lee

I feel so much better now that your water is in place - I've been worried sick! Especially since Jeff ran that trail a few years ago...now I can rest easier. Thank you Mel & Claudia! Get ready for a beautiful hike - it is truly gorgeous...but know that red dirt doesn't come out! Let me know when you are too mortified to wear your "red" ininji's and I'll order you more. Be safe and call me as soon as you get your cell access back! ...Jeff is still whining and wishing he was hiking with you...he'd be your pack mule!

The water drops are going to be a life saver for you now that you are getting in the desert. Stay cool and try not to do too much during the heat of the day. Watch the roads for snakes. They love it in the evening. Keep putting one foot in front of the other.
