As soon as we passed the junction of 95 and 276, the terrain drastically changed. We were walking along a tiny, trickling spring stream for quite a while, with huge red sandstone walls, caves, and other interesting rock formations. But this morning it changed to desert. Light-colored sand as far as the eye can see, spotted with sagebrush, cacti, and other weird, prickly desert plants. We could see mountains, so that kept our scene okay for a while. But, wow - what a long, hot, dry walk. There was absolutely no shade, so we sought shelter underneath the road in culverts.
I actually, for the first time, got bored with my own thoughts. I started playing the alphabet game in my head, and got tired of that, too. I was beginning to go mad. Thank goodness for breaks.
Gopher and Ba-ha Grandpa got their tire today - and boy, what a story they had trying to get it! But they ended up finding a shop that had one. So they were able to come out and find us. When they came out, we were in a culvert taking our siesta. But just as we got out and started walking again, they came up from behind us - with ice cream!! We chowed down and hiked our last couple of miles packless with a cookie-dough ice cream sugar high!
So off to Granny's Diner we went. And guess what she had on for dinner?! RIBS! Yummy! So we ate BBQ ribs, baked potatoes, baked beans, bread, and lemon meringue pie for desert.
We've showered, laundry is being dried, and we are just about ready to crash for yet another full day of walking tomorrow. One day at a time... and before we know it, we'll be licking the salty water of the Pacific off of our lips.
