An Antelope-y Labor Day

9-4-06

Start: Start of Jeep Rd.

Destination: Middle of Jeep Rd.

Elevation: 8,890 ft.

Miles: 17.1

Weather: Chilly, then hot, then chilly

We got a late start today again. But this time was because we had our laundry in the dryer, and the park had the room locked. It was supposed to open at 7:30, and finally at about 8:30 it opened up. We always have a good excuse for getting going late, don't we? I have to say... we are pretty good at that!

We got started on this road we were taking into Antimony. We got to the first fork, and I had a mini-breakdown. I couldn't remember which way to take. I had just gone over all the turns with Mary and Grandpa last night, but this one just didn't ring a bell. I just felt defeated for a moment. So mom called Mary and Grandpa and asked. We were soon back on the road and hiking away. The rest of the way we followed orange markers that they hung for us, so it was smooth-sailing from then on.

We hiked uphill all morning, but it was gradual among rolling hills of nothing growing more than 6 inches high. We'd hike around a corner and over a small knoll excited to see what was around the bend. Each time it was a winding, gravel road that stretched another few more miles around one hill and up over another. But, I think it kept us entertained for a few hours. We saw a few cows off in the distance, a couple of jackrabbits, and a few birds.

Later, we were taking a break under a sign (the only shade in sight), and Gopher Mary and Ba-ha Grandpa pulled up. We threw our packs in the trunk and hiked fast the last 7 miles. We started to see a lot of antelope. There was a herd around every corner. Ba-ha Grandpa even raced one with his car! He was laughing as he told us about that! Gopher says he saw it and stepped on it! I remember seeing a cloud of dust up ahead - that must've been why!

We headed back to Granny's Diner. Chef Granny had on scalloped potatoes and ham, corn, and her famous fruit salad for dessert. Mmm, mmm, good! She did a good job getting us fattened up to get us to Cali! We are revived!
