Busted!

9-6-06

Start: Antimony, UT

Destination: Circleville, UT

Elevation: 6086 ft.

Miles: 23.1

Weather: Overcast, a few sprinkles, cool - great hiking day!

We had a good hike today. It always helps, too, knowing that we'll be sleeping in a nice, warm, comfy bed at night. The weather treated us well. It was cool and shaded by clouds almost all day. Heavy clumps of rain showers with lightning grouped all around us, but never came over the top of us. We seemed to dodge them all day - we caught a few welcomed sprinkles, though.

We saw some weird rock formations today. The canyon walls almost looked like they had a middle layer of man-made cement with mixed colors of smaller stone imbedded into it. On top of that layer were huge chunks of rough, more rounded, reddish boulders. And some looked like they could fall at a whisper. We followed a river almost all day, and even though we didn't need the water, it sure was a welcome, wonderful sight.

We saw bulls today. Behind fences. Bulls behind fences are bulls that we like. But these weren't just any bulls. They were long-horn steers! Their horns had to be at least 3 feet long - EACH! And as thick as the end of a baseball bat! Yup, we are VERY glad those guys were behind fences... we took pictures, even.

We took our break in the afternoon like we always do, right on the roadside. This is when we got busted. I knew Bert and Marta were thinking about biking out to meet us in the afternoon to see how we were doing, and we both had the thought, "Sure, just as we fall asleep for a quick nap, they'll pull up - and we'll be snoozing!" So we fell asleep for a few minutes, and I remember hearing a noise. I looked up right away, and there was Bert on his bike! Busted snoozin' on the roadside! :) When I said "hi," mom jumped about 3 feet off the ground from laying down. I think it spooked her - just a little. It was quite funny.

Now we're back at Bert and Marta's, in clean clothes, and they are busily working on dinner. It smells wonderful! And we are hungry, hungry hikers! Ever heard of the game "Hungry Hungry Hippos?" I think they should replace the colorful hippos with little hikers with backpacks on - wouldn't that be fun? Every time I think of being "hungry hikers" I think of that game.

I'm off to relax, eat some pine nuts, almonds, and fruit salad before dinner, and then to pass out in a cushy bed. Bert and Marta are great hosts - and trail angels!
