The Next Dry Stretch

Destination: Beaver, UT

Elevation: 5890 ft.

Miles: 11.7

Weather: Warm, clear skies

We got to Beaver after what seemed like quick 12-mile jaunt along a dirt road. We spent the day running around to get info. Our package isn't at the PO yet, which we knew might happen, so we're heading there when they open tomorrow. Anyway, we used our time scoping out water-drop opps.

Our back-up plan is always to rent a car and drop ourselves because we will not walk into the desert without knowing water is going to be there. We asked around, and the nearest place to rent is 50 miles away in Cedar City. We will check with the car garages tomorrow - they sometimes have older rentals. We visited a few places in town, and being a Friday, not much was happening. The most helpful was the Army National Guard office. The gentleman was very helpful. He gave us several ranchers' phone numbers that haul water for their cattle along that route often, maybe daily. He also gave us a connection to a lady that works for USPS running mail to Garrison on a daily route. If she passes by us every day, we might have a water opportunity there, too. But we're going to look into the car first.

Our heads have been buzzing all day. Planning the water drops as we go is really sucking up time, which isn't too big of a deal, because safety is #1 - but we're getting so anxious, and all we want to do is move our feet in a westward direction.

Tomorrow we'll run errands, and either head out late and camp a few miles out of Beaver, or stay one more night and leave really early the next morning. We might do that and get the extra sleep. We are both starting to feel a little tired, but don't want to take more time off than we absolutely need at this point. Two reasons: the race to beat the Sierra's snowfall, and we're almost freakin' there! :) We did both lay down for 20 minutes this afternoon, and we were going to get up and make all our phone calls. Well, that 20 minutes turned into 180 minutes. It felt good, though. Every bit helps!

Speaking of sleep... I think I'll shoot for another 480 minutes!
