Start: UT 21, 7 mi. from NV
Destination: Baker, NV
Elevation:
Miles: 15.0
Weather: Windy (at our backs, yay!)
Our neighbor critter never showed his face, which is okay. We really respected his architectural skills, though. He had a very neat little hut. It got very windy last night, but we didn't mind. We were under trees, and were able to listen to the strong breeze blow through the leaves - something we've missed. It just doesn't sound the same through sagebrush.
I've managed to catch myself a little head cold, or allergy thing. I'm not really sure which it is, but I'm killing it with Dayquil and some rest. We got to Baker around noon (with the time change at the border). We chose to grab a motel, where we could catch a bit of extra rest. That turned out to be a swell plan - it rained and stormed - get this - it SNOWED a little in the mountains here already! This isn't quite what I expected from NV! We're sure learning a lot! We might see even more snow sooner than we expected. The cold front is going to stick around for a while yet, I guess.
As of now, we are going to take a challenging route, veering from our original plan. We are going to jump on HWY 6 & 50 - "The Loneliest Road in America." How do ya' like that? What kind of mental stamina will it take to WALK it? We'll see!
So, we hit Nevada. 11 states down, TWO to go! Less than 1,000 miles! We're now in PACIFIC time zone (good sign we're close, eh?). I'm starting to really feel a "pull" from the Pacific Ocean. I can't quite smell the salty ocean air, yet, but looking forward to it.
Oh, Baker, Nevada. Our first Nevada town. It's always neat to see how things change when we simply walk across a border line. Baker is a very neat little town. The Great Basin Nat'l Park is here, so there are a few main businesses that I believe must thrive on tourists. And we must be a little off-season. We walked into town and were immediately confused. The first place we walked up to had an "Open" sign in the window, and a "Closed" sign on the door. Next stop, the Post Office. They were open, and the lady working there was very helpful. Next stop, convenience store/restaurant. Open sign in one spot, closed sign in another. Then to the motel - open sign in one window, closed sign in the next. We were confused. But we managed to work it out so we could get our groceries, then the motel, nap, get laundry in, dinner... we just had to work around open/closed signs and odd hours. The ladies at the little art shop were sooo friendly, and even gave mom a pair of gloves in case it gets chilly on us.
Tomorrow we head out to Ely. I need to kick whatever is trying to kick me right now, so a good, long nights' rest in my near future... and in a warm, dry bed.
