Woke up frozen and laughing!

9-17-06

Start: Hwy 50, milepost 54, NV

Destination: Ely, NV

Elevation: 6435 ft.

Miles: 17.0

Weather: Really windy!

We woke up to a thick layer of frost lining the inside of the tent, and our water bottles were frozen. So, I would conclude that it got stinkin' cold last night! We stayed in our sleeping bags an extra half-hour this morning hoping the sun might warm things up even slightly.

We did somehow find something to laugh about. I don't even remember what it was. But we were both kicking our sleeping bags up and down and trying not to go to the bathroom! Whatever it was - it sure was funny! What a great way to wake up and start a day!

We did finally get moving and get camp all packed up. We headed out bound for Ely where we had a lot to do. We got there and first stopped in at the travel center. We grabbed a cup of coffee and the phone book. We needed a cheap room, the Post Office, a grocery store, and a place to get a milkshake! Most importantly, we had to get water out for our next stretch.

Our plan was to rent a car in Ely. But when we called the rental place we got bad news - they were going out of business and no longer were renting! A guy named Curtis, who was standing next to us waiting for a sandwich, was interested in what we were doing, and was instantly trying to help. He gave us his sister's contact info and said she'd probably be able to drive us out if we didn't find something. He also gave us a car dealership in town that might be willing to help.

We did end up getting a cheap room - a nice thing about Nevada, is the gambling places usually have cheap rooms. Then we hiked about 1-1/2 miles to the grocery store to re-supply for the next week.

This all filled up our day quickly. Tomorrow will be very busy with the water deal and the PO, so we're off to bed for a good nights' rest.
