The first thing I did this morning was drink a cup of coffee. Then mom and I went through our groceries. We separated the stuff we'll need for the next 4 days, and what we'll need for the 3-4 after that. We'll forward what we don't need yet to the next town, which is Eureka, by mailing it.
Then I got on the phone. I called Rich at Sahara Motors - our hero! He was able to hook us up with some wheels for the day. So right now, mom is driving, and doing an awesome job! We were nervous, not having driven in over 7 months. Since my license expired on my b-day, she has to do all the driving. It's probably better that way, anyway. Mom got me to take a Claritin this morning, and it made me just a BIT hyper. But it cleared my head! It felt kind of good to be able to breathe and have energy again!
Before leaving to drop water, we stopped at the Post Office where we picked up a package. Inside were goodies from Grandma L. for mom's birthday! Mom's b-day is tomorrow, so it came at the perfect time! Grandma and Aunt Rita sent mom a card, cash for a dinner and a "toast," zucchini muffins, peanut butter kiss cookies, and some applesauce cookies! Mmmm! Yeah, I got some, too. :) Thanks, Grandma L. and Rita!
We are pretty sure we're not going to hike tomorrow. Mom requested it for her birthday, and she really had to twist my arm... well, not really... I'm still not 100%, and I think the extra day of rest could really speed my recovery. I found out, though, that this "bush" I'm allergic to is another type of sagebrush. If you're allergic to sagebrush... this is NOT the place to be. Especially if it's windy. So tomorrow will be another zero day, but we're taking good advantage of it. We might even get in with the local paper if it works out.
So we dropped our water for the next week, all the way to Austin, NV. From there, we might be able to get in touch with the folks that run mail from Austin to Fallon. We got a number from the PO in Ely this morning. We're gettin' there! We'll get ourselves safely across this state one way or another.
The hotel gave us a little booklet called, "The Official HWY 50 Survival Guide - The Loneliest Road in America." You can have it stamped when you reach each city, mail it in and receive a certificate for making it. Driving. Hmmm. Yup, we're NUTS!
A quote from the booklet: "In July, 1986, Life magazine described Nevada's Highway 50 from Ely to Fernley as the "Loneliest Road in America." Life said there were no attractions or points of interest along the 287-mile stretch of road and recommended that DRIVERS have "survival skills" to travel the route."
Well, I can assure you we have the skills, and water is there, and although it might be a long hike, we'll make it safe and sound! Onward! View most recent blogs.
