We hiked hard today, and it felt good to make such good progress. We pushed up steep hills strongly, and slowly and steadily down. Mom slipped once on some leaves in the dirt on a steep downgrade, and to keep herself from slipping and rolling into a deep ravine, she fell on her knees and scraped one of them up a bit. But she got up okay and said with a smile, "Ooh, a war wound - a BIF mark!" What a trooper, eh? We've certainly become pro fallers!

We climbed and climbed, and when we got to Inspiration Point, we looked over where we climbed, became inspired and walked on. We really wanted to make it to Berkeley tonight.

It was in Sacramento we met Chris, one of our fellow Wisconsinite Cheeseheads who hosted us - he put the word out about us at work, and we got a call from Stephanie and her husband, Tim.  We are staying with them tonight. They made this really tasty spinach pie and a fresh veggie salad. Wine, too! It was very good. We sat and chit-chatted about all kinds of stuff. It was great to have a safe place to stay, so thank you, Stephanie and Tim!

We had two good laughs today. Mom said something about just walking until we get to Limantour Beach without stopping, and then said, "without any rest." I thought she said, "Bone and breast." I just kind of looked at her, thinking, "well maybe it's one of them sayings like, 'nose to the grindstone' that I've never heard." I repeated what I heard and we both burst out laughing. So now, we're heading to the beach (fists swooping into the air), "bone and breast!" This might be one of those things you had to be there for... maybe not. Bone and breast is pretty funny by itself for some reason.

The second thing - we were coming up to a fence, and I saw a weird movement behind it. Honestly, at first I thought it was an ostrich. I started to say, "It's a big..." I couldn't think of the word 'ostrich.' "A big... a big..." - then I realized it was a woman! She was doing something with a shovel - gardening or something, and all I saw was the top of her head and the shovel handle moving. So I stopped my sentence before I remembered the word 'ostrich.' Suddenly mom broke into hard laughter - we both even stopped and crossed our legs! I joined in, not exactly sure what I was laughing at. Then she said, "That lady... behind the fence... I thought it was... a monkey!" I about lost it! I told mom I thought she was an ostrich, and we just stood there and laughed, crying, legs crossed, for about 5 minutes. Then mom says, "I thought maybe it was a zoo behind the fence!" Man, did we have a good laughing day!

Tomorrow, we're Bay-bound, baby! Only 6 days 'til the finish!
