What a day. We walked though Fisherman's Wharf and made mental notes as to where we'd like to come back. We hiked along the bay's shoreline. Joggers, bikers, walkers, fishermen... boats... Alcatraz in the foggy distance... then, finally, the fog lifted just enough for us to see one of the high points of the Golden Gate Bridge. We swung into a cafe for a cup of coffee hoping that the fog would lift some more before we crossed. It couldn't have worked out more perfectly. When we crossed there was no breeze, the sun was shining, the sky was blue, the water was blue, and we got awesome views. We took a ton of pictures. And so there it was - the ocean. The Pacific Ocean.
We hiked onto some trails heading into the big hills after the bridge, and we got some more glimpses of ocean. It was teasing us. All we have to do is dip our toes in... and we're done. A sure sign we hiked clear across America. But we certainly aren't ready yet. We're saving the big moment for Friday.
We stopped on the trail for a coffee break... and freakin' get this! My friends, Sarah and Pam, from work, 4imprint, called. "Hey, Robin... we're in San Francisco!" "WHAT?!!" Oh, how cool!!! I am so excited! Unfortunately, mom's and my legs are doing the roadrunner thing where they go so fast they look like they're going in one continuous circle, and we were already across the bridge and on trails, so we weren't able to hook up with them tonight. But we are all anxious to see each other tomorrow!
We were nervous about just camping anywhere tonight, so a volunteer guy mentioned camping at Muir Beach. So we detoured a bit to get here. And let me tell you - I am doing yet another thing I've always dreamed of doing - camping right on the beach. I mean, under my sleeping bag is the imprint of my body in the sand, so I'll sleep comfy tonight. And on top of that, we ate our dinner bagels while watching two surfers, a horseback rider, dogs playing, and the sun setting behind it all. I feel like I'm in a movie. It's perfect. The waves are crashing against rocks and softly rolling in on the beach... it's RIGHT there! And can you believe we resisted walking in it!? We did! We didn't TOUCH that salty water... Friday!
Oh, boy! 4 days left!
